Definitely what were the Giants thinking? Hey Hawkins wasn't too bad in the middle relief, he just sucked as a closer. Kline was just all around horrible. I wonder if maybe the O's will consider him for the closing spot!!!!
Both of them are horrible... it really doesn't matter. The Giants wanted another lefty out of the pen since Eyre is gone so they traded one bad player for another bad player. I'll tell you that every time LaTroy came in a game, no lead was safe. Who knows, maybe this will help both of them - a change of scenery can always be good - but I don't think its that big a difference. I hope to dear god - at least for O's fans sake - that Hawkins won't be tried in the closer's role there. Regardless, when Sabean made the Hawkins deal I was very unhappy - I thought it was one of his worst moves in a while - I guess I was right
There will be a couple of dynamics working against Hawkins in an Orioles uniform. First, Hawkins is a fly ball pitcher with a propensity to give up homers in tight ballgames (6-for-15 in save chances in 2005). Second, Camden Yards has been known to relinquish its share of homers, a bad combination with point one.
Hawkins rattled when he was a closer. It would only take one or two more if he was the closer and he might not even be able to set up. My guess is if they don't sign a closer Ray is given the job to lose. And Hawkins sets him up. I doubt they want to mess with Hawkins mind.He was solid as a setup man . A little less pressure.
