Cards Interested In Braden Looper

Word on the street is that the Cardinals plan on making a run at Braden Looper this week to add some depth to their bullpen.

Looper had a lost '05 - his HR rate shot up, his lost his 2004 gains in control, and his K rate plummeted. He lost his closer's title in September and was an the operating table the following month (shoulder surgery). With the AC joint arthritis cleaned up, it's worth a million bucks on the Cards' part to see if he can return to 2004 levels in a setup role.

The Cardinals are also poking their head around to see how much Octavio Dotel is asking for. Dotel may not be ready til midseason, but many Cardinal fans think they'll have the division locked up by then anyway.

Why would the Cards need and want Looper? That would be stupid if they go after him, there bullpen is fine without him, and considering how much pitchers have been going on the market this year there obviously going to end up overpaying him if they do end up signing him.

Well, he's got a good arm and has proven that he is capable of doing a good job in relief in the past. I wouldn't bet te farm on him but he can be gotten at an attractive price with some high reward possibilities. Plus, if Tavarez walks...and Izzt is always an injury risk.

Actually, the bullpen isn't fine. Tavarez is a FA at the moment, Eldred retired, and Al Reyes is recovering from surgery. There's some holes there to fill for sure. Is Looper the answer? Probably not. Most definitley not. God no........

Looper shut down the Yankees in 2003
He had a very good 2004.
And pitched hurt last year.

I think he'll make a great set up guy.
What are you guys doing?

You never know until you ask. It wouldn't surprise me if Looper took a 1 year deal to help improve his value and return to closing somewhere next year.

well the cards are kind of desperate to get another veteran righty in the pen. looper isnt a half bad option. its either him or roll the dice on todd jones. dotel is nice but will miss half the season. what else is left?
