Make sure you play the tutorial.
Understand these 3 things, and you will think the game is super easy,
1. Culture.
2. Religion.
3. Combat.
One hint I will give you is DO NOT build too many cities at the start. 5-6 cities is plenty. I know this is counter-intuitive for a Civ 2 player, but you get heavy maintenance penalties for having too many cities (stupid, imo).
It's a pretty good game. Definitely much better than Civ III. I didn't really care for that version. I noticed in Civ IV that you can get other civs to give you all their cities sometimes. Just start a war with them. Then offer a peace treaty, select all their cities, $$$, and whatever else you want and click "What is the price for peace?". They will offer you the deal you selected so you just accept and get all their cities, excluding the Capital of course. Sometimes though you can only get some of their cities.

Doh... Maybe I should start with the tutorial... My friend was emphasizing culture to me and how important it was... New concept to me.
Real estate investment is my profession so all I want to do is accumulate land. So naturally my instinct is to build cities and lots of them. I'll keep that in mind.

By the time the 2nd expansion had come out they had corruption balanced pretty well IMO.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
