All this is is fodder to make Scott Boras come back to the table with a deal with less years. Nothing more, nothing less.
Don't be surprised when you start hearing the Sox are after Pierre or Gathright.
Are you talking in terms of Damon re-signing? Not sure if I see how it affects those talks.
Simple. Scott Boras, Damon's agent, is trying to get an inflated contract in terms of years and dollars. There are only a handful of teams that can pay it. The Yankees usually get involved to drive up the price of a player by saying they're interested. The Sox do the same.
However, in this case the Sox are going to start saying they are interested in other CFs so that Boras comes back to the table. When Boras sits down the Sox are going to lowball him making it seem they have other options like Loretta in CF or Gathright or Pierre. Therefore Boras has to lower the terms of the deal...maybe not in $$ but certainly in years. Noone in their right mind will give out a seven year deal at 12mil a season. Ain't going to happen. Especially a 33 year old guy with a propensity to run into walls.

I don't see what's so wrong with this trade. Wells could be easily replaced by one of the younger guys(not necesarily lefty, but Papelbon?) Mirabelli is...well...only good when Wake pitches and I don't know how many years he has left in him(Wake)
Don't know who that Japanese guy is but Loretta is a 2b with good average and some pop.

Are you interested in joining a 28 teams dynasty league? If so, PM me.

They're gonna find a spot in that rotation for Papelbon no matter what. This kid has great stuff.
What tells you that Wake is done? The last 3 years he's started at least 30 games. He has 16 wins last year and pitched the most innings in his career. He's got a few years left in him IMO

Accodring to the Providence Journal...
Linebrink has been added in the discussion
The Padres' initial offer of Sean Burroughs and former Boston outfielder Dave Roberts didn't do much for the Sox, but the teams have recently talked about an expanded deal that includes Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli. The Padres are about to lose catcher Ramon Hernandez to free agency.
In return, the Red Sox are seeking one of two relievers -- Scott Linebrink or Akinori Otsuka -- and second baseman Mark Loretta.
