The Cardinals officially have placed themselves in contention for free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett by breaking precedent with a four-year offer worth almost $10 million per season, sources confirmed Thursday night.

Burnett, the centerpiece of the Cardinals' offseason planning so far, is considered the most attractive talent within a relatively thin free-agent pool. The Arkansas native is expected to decide among several offers before Major League Baseball's winter meetings convene Monday in Dallas.

To be honest, I think this is the one he was waiting for.
I think he signs in STL by Sunday

Dave Duncan is a really good pitching coach. It could be interesting to see what he could do with a talent like Burnett.

I gotta agree. In St. Louis, they will win, pay him, and appreciate him. Plus, by staying in the NL some of his numbers will be better.

he is a really good ballplayer.
Just not so much over the last 15 years or so.

But that shouldnt matter to STL, who has been trotting out Mabry and Taguchi for the last couple of seasons.

The Mabry/Taguchi platoon only happened for half a year in 2004. Before that it was Drew and after that it was Walker. Mabry signed with the Cubs. So if the choices are Klesko or a Taguchi/J. Rodriguez platoon, I'll take the latter.

Back to the topic at hand. I'm pessimistic about this. I'd love to see him in STL and the deal sounds reasonable but from all the reports Burnett could get more money elsewhere.
