Will Piazza be a steal next year?

His value will be very low. But if he does indeed go to an AL team and winds up catching some and DHing mostly, I believe that his numbers will rebound. Yes, he is getting up there in age. But as a catcher playing mostly at DH, 20+ HRs should be attainable.

If all that you expect is 20 HR along with a poor BA, then I don't think you'll be disappointed. I wouldn't expect much more, and I also wouldn't waste anything but a late rounder on him.

If he's a full time DH I think it's reasonable to expect more than 20 HR. He has been able to hit 20 HR in each of the last two years while catching and battling injuries. In the last two years he's played 129 and 113 games respectively. Being a full-time DH would give Piazza a legitimate opportunity to play in 140+ games. Piazza is a great pick for catcher IMO as long as he's a full-time DH (or catching sparingly).

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Some AL team will sign him to DH and spot catch. He will sign for 2 years in the range of 3 mil a year with incentives. He should hit 25 HR, 85 rbi and bat about 275. He will be injured and misss about 3 weeks. If this scenario occurs then he is a steal.

The last rumor I heard had him going to Minnesota to DH and spell Mauer. Of course, that probably means he'll be starting catcher for half the year...

at C ?
I don't think he will be a steal so much.
Once he signs, there will be plenty of offseason hype about the greatest offensive catcher of all time, and it will shoot his value right back up.

A steal would be somebody like Buck exploding ..

I hate catchers. :-t
