According to the Palm Beach Post, the Marlins are close to a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Rangers for Hank Blalock and a pitching prospect. The Marlins are asking for either John Danks or Thomas Diamond, the Rangers' top two pitching prospects. Unless they back down from that, the deal may yet fall apart. Unless the Marlins are paying a portion of what Lowell is owned, Blalock alone should be enough to get a deal done. Beckett may be worth Blalock, but at $18 million over the next two years, Lowell has negative trade value. Blalock will make $13.5 million over the next three years.
Looks like Texas might finally get that ace they've been looking for.
Texas might be happy, but with Beckett & Blalock on my dynasty league team, I'm not. Both benefit from playing where they are.
Oh well, lets hope they're true stars who can put up useful numbers wherever they play...

If this becomes a reality, I think Beckett's value may decline a bit, but I think Blalock's value tumbles big time. He'll be going from perhaps the 2nd best park to hit in to one of the most pitcher friendly. Secondly all of his stats away from Arlington are really bad. His real fantasy value in the past has been playing at home, and really against RH pitching.
If this happens, I think the Fish take a major step backwards. They'll lose both Burnett and Beckett from their rotation. Ouch!
suuuuuuuch a bad deal for the marlins!! even if they get to unload the bad contract, that's just an awful deal. beckett is way too good to just get blalock and a prospect back.

That's ridiculous. It's a good trade for the Marlins strictly because they get to rid themselves of Lowell's contract. If this frees up money to keep Delgado, then they definitely win.
Plus Beckett has to be one of the most overrated players in baseball. Sure he's a decent pitcher, but he doesn't stay healthy, and even when he is it's not like he's ever been much more than a .500 pitcher. We're not talking 20 wins and a sub-3.00 ERA or anything.
Maybe he turns into a Cy Young winner at some point, but I doubt it. And in any case, Blalock has just as good of a chance as turning into a MVP winner.

change "beckett" to "blalock" and i might agree with you.
don't get me wrong, he's a fine player and a solid 3B. he's just nothing special. beckett is something special, and that's why I don't think it's a good trade for the marlins. it is perfectly concievable that beckett could win a cy young at some point in his career, but i don't see blalock ever breaking even the top 5 of 3Bs.

No, no, no, no. This can't be right. I didn't think anything could make me curl up in the fetal position and whimper like a little girl, but this does the trick. Florida can't be this stupid... Can they? Now, pardon me while I go bang my head on a brick wall.
