Arod was taking a paycut. After the insurance company and the player's union signs off on the new deal and we get the full details I think we'll find that the Braves end up paying more in the end run (not that that's a bad thing). If the union allows him to add a year of service and lose money I'd definitely call that a double standard.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

originally, he gets $17M this year, $15M next year, and $15M in 2008 (assuming he makes the vesting options). total: $47M over 3 years
now, he's getting $11M each year for the next 3 years plus an additional $4M signing bonus, and a vesting option worth "between $8 and $11M" for 2009. total (assuming max vesting option): $47M over 4 years
so sure, it's the same amount of money, but he's got to play another year of ball to get it. and you figure someone would have tendered him a contract in 2009, so with the extra year, it really is a pay cut. perhaps one as large as $5-10M (depending on what he would have gotten in '09. he'll be 38 at that point, so it may not be much, but brian giles is looking to get paid $10M+ for his "age 38 year", so....)
either way, great job by the braves and chipper. now, if only we can do something about that awful deal anruw's got....
so you are thinking that Larry Jones just gave the Braves an extra year of service .. for free?
lol .. no way.
The Union would have his Larrys head on stick
The deal saves the Braves about $15 million over the next three seasons, but Larry's new deal includes includes a $4 million signing bonus due in January, and adds a vesting option for 2009 worth between $8 million and $11 million.
He was only signed until 2006and had two option years.
So they guaranteed the last two years of his deal, and
he just picked up a 12 to 15 million dollar contract extension in 2009.

..
BTW ...
That link for contracts that has been going around the cafe for the last six months or so.This one. ! It already had the Larry Jones deal on there and the AJC just reported it this evening ..

the "option years" are vesting options, meaning it's not a decision the team makes but rather some benchmark he's got to reach statistically. the vesting option is for 2007 is just for 450 ABs which will definitely happen if he doesn't get injured (although i'll grant that injuries havn't been uncommon for him recently). either way, he should be able to manage to 450 ABs with little difficulty, IMO. at best, he's gotten him self a slightly less risky (for him) as well as longer deal for a somewhat large price cut.
either way, i'm glad it happened and i hope there arent' any problems with the union.
