BOSOX'S OFFER TO DAMON

Postby coleminer » Thu Nov 17, 2005 4:35 pm

Johnny Damon - OF - BOS - Nov. 17 - 4:05 am et
The Red Sox made their first offer to free agent Johnny Damon yesterday. According to the Boston Globe, it was worth in the neighborhood of $27 million to $30 million over three seasons.
It may include an option for a fourth year. Obviously, agent Scott Boras wants a contract in a far more upscale neighborhood. Still, this is pretty good as far as first offers go. The Red Sox shouldn't think about going higher than four years and $40 million to keep Damon. Even that would be pushing it. Nov. 17 - 4:05 am et

Any predictions? Mine: BoSox 3 yr, $34M

I heard Damon and his agent wants 7yrs and 84mill!!! BoSox would be crazy to make that deal. I think their initial offer is pretty fair but I doubt he'll take it. But I agree that in no way should they go anywhere over 10mill, maybe not even that much. Who knows though right now.

Who else is interested in Damon this offseason?

According to rotoworld (11/07/2005):"Johnny Damon (Red Sox) - Previous prediction: Red Sox - five years, $47.5 million
Until the postseason, Damon figured to get the biggest contract of any offensive player this winter. Now, it’s almost certain to be Konerko instead, and with the Yankees reportedly only having limited interest, the market for Damon could be quite a bit weaker than expected. The Red Sox would like to have him back, but for three or four years rather than five. Also interested could be the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Nationals, Angels, Dodgers and Orioles. Prediction: Red Sox - four years, $40 million"

The Cubs should be interested if they don't get Pierre or Furcal. Even if the papers say the Yankees aren't interested I have to think they would at least try to drive up the price. I've also heard Detroit and LA but those seem like longshots.

I think Damon ends up with the Detroit Tigers.

Nationals - maybe if the team wasn't in limbo. No way MLB approves that kind of cash.
Diamondbacks - Didn't they waste enough money last year?

That makes sense. They can add him to their overpaid team.

My apologies. I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee.

Rotoworld cracks me up!

Johnny Damon - OF - Red Sox

According to Newsday, the Yankees may yet show interest in Johnny Damon if they think he'll accept a four-year deal.
Even if they don't sign him, it's worth pursuing him just to drive up Boston's bid. Agent Scott Boras likes the idea. "I believe the Yankees would dominate with Johnny Damon on their team," Boras said. "The key component is, how do you maximize A-Rod and Jeter? [Damon] makes A-Rod, Jeter and Matsui better." If that's the case, $84 million for seven years seems cheap. :-b

That's about as far as I would go for an offer for Damon. He is in decline and I think anything more than a substantial 3 year deal is jumping overboard. I don't think he is worth over 9 million per season.
