New York — What's in a town's name? A marketing opportunity for U.S. satellite television provider EchoStar Communications Corp., which announced yesterday that tiny Clark, Tex., has renamed itself DISH, Tex., after EchoStar's DISH Network.
But in pursuing its marketing coup, Denver-based EchoStar has become embroiled in a local political squabble that has only become more bitter with the name change.
Bill Merritt, mayor of newly christened DISH (population 125), insisted yesterday that he was just looking to create some buzz for his north Texas town by accepting EchoStar's offer of free satellite television service for all residents of the town that agreed to rename itself.
I remember a few years ago a town in Oregon changed it's name to Half.com. What's going on here??
Free satellite in Texas. Legal marijuana in Colorado. Decisions. Decisions.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
They were talking about this on the morning show on FOX here this morning. One of the hosts then suggested that Phoenix follow suit and rename the city either "Porshe" or "Bentley". I'd be down.

This afternoon, I'm circulating a petition to rename my city "Heidi Klum, Virginia." Wish me luck.
