I'm not sure how long ago it was, 70's or 80's, but two scientists claimed they discovered Cold Fusion. Well, the scientific community went nuts as did everyone else. This would revolutionize our power needs and solve our energy problems, so everyone was very excited.
That was until other scientists tried it... and realize it was BS. Those guys didn't discover anything. So now, I think that the scientific community is going to err on the side of caution, especially when some guy claims to have made a discovery that defies establish scientific theories.
