As a Phil's fan I'm really happy to see this. Howard was a monster for us this year and he hit a ton of big homers. I'm looking forward to him and Utley in the middle of the lineup for the next couple of years. He does need to improve his average against lefties but overall I think that this award was well deserved. Congrats Ryan Howard!

Look at the voting. Look Close.

Misprint: Clint Barmes actually plays in the NL not AL. And 28 vote for the AL awards not 29.

I was sold on the "whole year" argument from from Taveras supporters. I think he should have won the award.

I agree, but given the track record of such awards these are actually pretty good I think.

I don't know a whole year of a sub-par bat and a good glove?

Howard had a better year. BP's Value Over Replacement Player:

Howard: VORP 28.7
Taveras: VORP 11.9

Conventional Stats:
HR RBI OBP SLG
Howard: 22 63 356 567
Taveras: 3 29 325 341

I think the numbers pretty much speak for themselves.

In a side note Jonny Gomes according to VORP had the best year of all of the ROY batter canidates.

Granted, he wasn't slamming balls out of the park or driving in runs, but he batted, what, .290+ with a respectable OBP, and he scored a fair amount of runs, correct? I wouldn't say that's sub-par. He certainly was helping his team when he came to the plate.
