With Ryan and Wagner both getting grossly large contracts, it looks like whoever the Yanks get for the pen will be costing them more than if they had jumped on them earlier. I personally like Farnsworth, but for a guy with closer's stuff do you really think he would want to come and be a setup man? I don't think so. Anyone like Todd Jones? He's not one of the premier names out there, but he had a solid season for FLA last year and could come at a pretty good price.

I don't see Farnesworth succeeding at all in NY. Jones had such a good season that he'll likely get a cheap closers gig, and wouldn't want to be a MR in New York. If they could get him on the cheap I'd go for it though.
I'd also pursue Dotel, Rincon and maybe Tavarez. I wouldn't overspend on anyone though, because none of the remaining bullpen candidates are that good.
November 29, 2005 -- While the Mets made back-page news again yesterday by landing Billy Wagner, the Yankees took steps toward rebuilding their bullpen.
According to several industry sources, the Yankees are engaged in serious negotiations with flame-throwing, right-handed setup man Kyle Farnsworth and are very close to inking lefty specialist Mike Myers.
Why are we trying to get Mike Myers? Farnsworth, and Tavarez that's what Cashman need to make happen now!!!!

I'd rather spend pittance on Myers than give Farnsworth $5 mill per year. That guy will implode in New York. Stay away from him Cashman. Go take a risk on Dotel with a incentive contract or try to lure Todd Jones or Bob Wickman.

OK I agree but when did the yankees worry about spending money? Second, do you really think Jones will take that much less or Dotel for that matter? Just think about Wagner and Ryan's contract

People are way too obsessed with lefties and righties and lefty vs. lefty and righty vs. righty and etc. Remember our last "lefty specialists?" Al Leiter...Alan Embree...need I say more? Just get a good pitcher, regardless of what hand he throws with. Going out and getting a mediocre pitcher because he's a lefty is dumb.

This offseason is when the Yankees worry about spending money. And for good reason. I've had enough of them throwing money away to clowns like Wright and Pavano. The Yankees could have a payroll of around $100 million and still be the dominant team in the league. They just throw money out the window though. Throwing that money at Kyle Farnsworth is doing exactly that...throwing money out the window.
I don't expect Jones to take less than that, but I like Jones more than I like Farnsworth. Mark my words...Farnsworth will get plastered in New York. Wagner and Ryan's contracts don't apply here. We aren't hiring a closer, we are trying to get middle relief. Big difference.
Dotel will not get a big contract at all. He's coming off of Tommy John surgery. He'll likely get a 1 year incentive deal, where he only makes money if he completes certain objectives (games played, etc.) Take a chance on those guys, not Farnsworth. He'll get wrecked in the Bronx.
The deal is this like you all Yankee fans want to win. That's the botton line. How can you want Jones who is a junk pitched over Farnsworth. Two do we really need to add a so called lefty specialists who will not make it past the first month in the Bronx. Ok I can see Dotel but, what has he done in the past 2 years? I hope Cashman remember that K Brown's is nolonger on the Yanks thank God for that that do allow them sone flexibility.

Jones is far from an ideal option. But my opinion is that he'll be cheaper than Farnsworth, and would have more of a chance to succeed in New York than Farnsworth would. $17+ million for 3 years of Kyle Farnsworth? No thanks. I'd rather sign nobody and keep that money until we can find someone who might be worth it.
You ask what Dotel has done? What has Farnsworth done in his career before last year? He's not some young guy, he's been aruond for a long time. Plus Dotel won't command near the money that Farnsworth will in the open market.
