1) sign burnett 2) sign millwood 3) send away delmon young for barry zito 4) sign a couple decent MRs
bam. instant contender for the wild card if not the division.
their offense is already top-notch, and if they could just get a few more decent arms to bring in around kazmir, they'd be set. baez will be fine as closer, and their bullpin wasn't that bad last year.
anyhow, they could probably do all 4 things i mentioned above and still have a payroll about half that of the redsox and 1/4-1/3 of the yankees.
now, i'm not saying it would be in their long-term interest to send away delmon for zito (or to sign burnett and millwood.... both have injury histories and have bounced between elite and mediocrity), i'm just saying that they could do it easily.
There is no way I'd trade Delmon for Zito if I was the D-Rays. I think that even by signing just Burnett and Millwood they could be contenders. The top of their rotation would be Burnett-Millwood-Kazmir which is pretty solid.
you want to deal with Billy Beane and contend?

But Zito is no longer the 2001 version that can be your ace.
He bounced back strong in the second half thanks to adding a few new pitches to mix it up. In the A's forum, we already discussed Zito for Young, but it's a pipe dream as there's no way the Rays would do that trade unless they'd be willing and able to sign Zito longterm, and even then...

well, this is the "day dreaming" period.
Koskie for Morneau now Young for Zito. Keep dreaming boys

wow i need to go check out the A's forum if yaw are discussing trades such as this.... 0% chance of delmon being traded in the next 4 or 5 years.... as far as the rays future, yes it is bright,,,but the injuries to townsend and niemann(the great Rice duo from a few years back) hurts for sure.... but as pogo said this off season would be a great time to move gomes since everybody thinks he is great , huff (he will bring quite a bit more from a team for the whole season then he will at the halfway point of 2006), and gathright(lots of teams need a center fielder that cant field now dont they ).... hopefully with our new gm now, he can make some moves to bring in some pitching to go along with kazmir in the rotation,,,, i would love to see a veteran MR to come in as well to help the guys in the pen(but they were not that bad this past year though).......
the new ownership has said that they will add payroll, but i dont think this is the year that the drays step it up in free agency,,, as i think they will be more inclined to locking up baldelli, kazmir and some of the other kids for several years.....
building from within is probably the best way to go, too. i mentioned earlier my reservations about both burnett and millwood, and since they're the best out there, they'll get over-paid significantly. this is just a bad off-season for SP.
btw, do you know how far out neimann is now?

niemann is set to be back ready for spring training 06, but Townsend is out for the entire 2006 season
I don't know if this was mentioned already, but the D-Rays got something right when they locked up C. Crawford for 5-6 years and only $31MM. Definitely got him for less than I would've thought. Kinda reminded me of the Indians back in the day, when they signed Baerga, ALomar, and Omar to deals before they were eligible to hit FA. If D-Rays continue down this path and up payroll to 40MM+, they'll be just fine. However, this is not the year to do it via free agency...way too few quality players, way too much $$ to sign them...
