The Padres initial offer to Trevor Hoffman was a two-year, $10 million contract. He's expected to counter with a three-year deal worth between $25 million and $27 million.

I think Giles would be the better move especially considering how strong their bullpen is but letting Hoffman go would be a big PR hit.
Hoffman is the way to go. He's been the only consistent player on that team for a long time and he showed again in 05 that he hasn't lost any ability. SD would be STUPID to let him go.

Only with the fans who don't understand baseball. The smart fans will applaud this.

thats right!!!
Its called loyalty, something I would expect no east coast team to understand. Well maybe the Mets with Franco, but that is the only name that comes to mind.
Trevor is a HOFer ... and letting him walk now over a few million seems idiotic. Especially since we are paying millions for that garbage out in left.
Pay Trevor!!!
Make the third year an option, what ever, just pay him!!

That's your opinion.
I happen to think is would be stupid to give a 38 year old closer a 3 year deal for $27 mil. Plus SD would be allocating over 13% of their payroll to someone who only throws 60 innings a year.
