Emulators

Postby Big Pimpin » Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:38 pm

Ok, so one of our IT guys, knowing that we don't have any games on our computers here at work, sent me the MAME emulator (Google it if you're interested), which has a bunch of old school games (many of which showed up in the recent competition, e.g. Contra, Tetris, Galaga, Dig Dug, Bubble Bobble, Ghosts 'n Goblins, the list goes on and on). Anyway, it got me looking at some other emulators, specifically Nintendo NES emulators. I do plan on buying an old NES at some point, but an emulator seems like it should do for the time being.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts or tip on emulators. The one I got was already all set up, so I don't fully understand the whole ROM thing and how to set up games. I also don't know what emulator I want. So if anyone has any tips on a specific emulator and how to set it up with games or anything else, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks guys. ;-D

I don't know a lot about emulators except that they're awesome.

I had a SNES emulator that worked great too. Basically, 8 and eve 16-bit video game cartridges are pretty primitive compared to today's computing standards. The code for each game can be compressed into a small file called a ROM. Basically, an emulator just loads the ROM in the same way that the Nintendo loaded the information in a game cartridge.

If you ever smashed opened an NES cartridge (I once smashed up Populus because it sucked) you'll find that the electrical workings inside are much smaller than the size of the cartridge would suggest.

As far as the best emulators out there... it's hard to say. I'd just Google it, I'm sure you'll find some good info out there.

emulators are pretty cool. my cousin bought a stand up arcade game and set it up to run like a thousand different games. goes good with a dart board and pool table. i havent used one in a while so i dont know which one is best anymore. even when i did use them i think i switched between a couple because sometimes a game seemed to run a little better depending on which one i used or a couldnt find a particular game for a that emulator.

David Ortiz's favorite arcade game is Street Fighter II.

He is always Blanka. No one knows why.

Where do you guys get the ROMs. When I was like 15 I downloaded a good NES Emulator and ROMs, however, recently I wanted to download ROMs again, but I couldn't find free ROMs for the life of me.

Try here. I'm going to give it a shot tonight when I get home. Seems to have a lot of stuff! Let me know if you try it and it doesn't work.

I've had an FCEU emulator for NES for about a year, and it's served me well. You can download it here.

CoolRom is a good site, and also check out http://www.nesfiles.com.
