I don't know about the rest of you Met fans, but this sent a chill up my spine. Pedro's arm would fall off sooner rather than later, as it seems he wants to pitch for the Domincan Republic...not set in stone yet, but assuming his toe is better, looks like he will...
I dont have a problem with him pitching in that tournament. He would be pitching in ST games around that time too and you need your innings during the Spring either way.
Good catch. It's early, and I skimmed over the part that said March 3rd. I was assuming this was more akin to winter ball, but if it is only a 3 week tournament in the spring, I'll deal.
Before I heard this I actually thought he would be a good pickup for next year because he only threw 217 innings this year and he would have the whole offseason to rest. Now that he's throwing in this tournament I'm thinking of hedging my bets alittle bit. Is the tournament before or at the same time as ST?
Thinking of this from the Mets perspective, they have a lot of $$$ wrapped up in Pedro. The only way I'd let him is if he signed something saying that if he got hurt in this tournament the Mets would be released from paying part of his salary.
Pedro doesn't have control problems. He's a 3-time Cy Young winner. He has health problems. If I were Mets ownership, this would concern me.

It's a 16 day tournament that starts March 3rd. So, essentially, it would be the same time as ST. That said, he definitely would be racking up more innings as he would not be eased into the ST schedule and would likely be throwing 100 plus pitches from the start. It could haunt them down the stretch and in the playoffs if they have a good season. It does worry me, but at least it isn't winter ball like I first thought.
Yeah, that wouldn't be good for the Mets at the end of the year expecially if they are still in the race. He didn't throw this year at the end of the year because of injuries and being tired (just think if he had more innings on his arm at the same time next year expecially if it actually meant something).
Didn't he have a toe injury at the end of this season? He could have pitched but since the Mets were out of it... Anyway I'd like to see this baseball classic do well and eventually become a world cup. I don't want teams blocking the better the players.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Depending on how much he pitched during the tournament and during the rest of ST, this could mean more forced rests down the stretch. However, if he did this and the Mets just pitched him enough in ST to check up on him and such, it could have little negative effect.
