If someone attempts to steal a base, and only manages to steal said base because of a defensive error (ex: the 2nd baseman drops the throw and the runner slides in well after he would have caught it), then does the runner still get credited with the SB?

No, I don't think it would be, because if you score it an error than you assume there would have been an out at that base. I'm not sure, though.

IIRC, if the umpire signals out and changes it to safe it becomes an error and isn't a SB.
My apologies. I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee.
