Yeah, Furcal has been a GG SS this year... moving him to 2B would be dumb. I don't think he's going to the Mets, though. Another speedy infielder with little pop isn't what they need, especially not at 8-9 Mil. That money is better spent on a big bat, especially when Anderson Hernandez is ready to play.

I would LOVE to see us:

Sign Brian Giles, plop him in LF
Trade Cameron/Cairo/Brazell for Manny
Sign BJ Ryan or Wagner (but Wagner to a shorter deal than what we'd sign Ryan for)
Trade Looper for a bag of peanuts. But only honey roasted. We must insist on the honey roasted.
Trade Floyd (this hurts me more than it hurts you), Jacobs, and a prospect if necessary for Helton
Sign Piazza to a 1-year deal, have him back up Castro (or perhaps LaRue? Hadn't thought of that.) Give Piazza #1 pinch-hitting duties and have him play every now and then behind the plate, when LaRue is tired or something
Keep and Hernandez and make him the starting 2B


That would make a Met field of:

C - LaRue / Piazza - 2.5 mil combined
1B - Helton - 13 mil, but Rockies would pick up some salary, so say... 8-9 mil
2B - Hernandez - 300K
3B - Wright - 350K
SS - Reyes - 350K
LF - Giles - 6 mil (power drop-off, maybe 8-9 mil)
CF - Beltran - 12 (13?) mil
RF - Manny - 22 mil

While maintaining the rotation of:

Pedro - 12 mil
Benson - 7 mil
Glavine - 8 mil
Seo - 325K
V-Zam - 2.5 mil

And a bullpen of:

BJ Ryan - 7 mil?
R Hernandez - 650K
Heilman - 350K
Juan Padilla - 300K
Dae-Sung Koo - 300K

Total (Estimated) Payroll: 90-95 million

I would have no problems with that. Look at that offense. It's absolutely disgusting. In the good way.

Aaron Heilman needs to be given more responsibility.

He led the bullpen in innings this year. I don't see how we'd give him MORE responsibility.

Like I said, I don't see him getting much more than 8/9 mil per year (considering his power struggles- and it's not just the PETCO factor, he couldn't bang away either), and if Minaya is a shrewd negotiator he can backload the contract so it's 6 or 7 for next year.

The problem with Helton/Giles/Manny is that the Mets will have to re-sign Reyes and Wright before their three contracts go up, meaning a huge payroll at one point or another.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think Helton's contract is up in 2007, which is the year for arbitration for Reyes and Wright. Manny's going to have a huge contract no matter what we do but I think Boston will probably eat some of it (IE A-Rod and Texas). Giles... It depends how much we offer to him.

Wright will get a bigger contract than Reyes unless we allow Reyes to walk (which we won't, because Reyes never walks. Rim shot!). At that 90-95 marker, we'd probably add anywhere from 8-13 million per year on those two, while cutting Glavine's and V-Zam (adding Petit and... starter X), which cuts about 8-10 million off the payroll. So even adding those guys we have a relatively decent payroll when compared to the other big market teams, hovering a little under 100 million.
