California Rant

The newly deputized editor did not start a thread on this or put a link to it in the article (or turn on the flashing POV light for that matter) but he is learning on the job so I will give him a break ;-)

As for wrveres' California Rant - well done ;-D

I wonder if you pulled a muscle wiping your tears while patting yourself on the back at the same time :-b

First of all - the games are scheduled so that people can go and see them. If they were scheduled to start at 7PM EST so that the East Coast could watch them I am sure that you would have a fit about not being able to watch your team at a reasonable hour and Californian season ticket holders would cancel their subscriptions b/c they would still be at work when the games started.

Second, why do you care whether people on the East Coast watch your games? You don't watch the AL East teams because you are at work when they play (and b/c the Jays they are never on US TV but that's a separate rant) and that should not bother East Coasters. Each year there are 2,430 scheduled regular season games. That should be enough for everyone. I will catch the odd Padres, Angels, Dodgers games on weekend afternoons or when they play out east. Good enough for me.

As for the 159 MLB players from Cali - how many hockey players ya got? :-B And why did you break the Canadians down by province? Put them all together in one impressive number like the Venezualans and Japanese.

btw- the one Vietnamese player is Danny Graves, freaky eh?

California — Population: 33,871,648 ; 1st,

Dominican Republic — Population: 8,950,034

There's your reason... California has 24,921,614 more people yet only 60 more MLB players... don't be too proud about that stat...

I am not saying to start them at 7pm EST, that is way to early. Ideally 9pm would be an ideal start. That would be 6 here and I don't think it would effect attendence all that much, if at all. One could argue that it would cause traffic jams but that is BS, because California routinely has traffic jams at 4 in the morning. By starting them at 10:05 half of the country is off to their nightly news and pillow. They are not going to sit down to watch something that will end at 1 in the morning. But yet if it was going to end around 11:30 -12 they just might. It just seems to me that MLB alienates at least half of its viewing population by starting them that late.
Weekend games are a gimme. They should start earlier.

As for Hockey .. lol .. we have three of those teams here, or so I am told, and I would gamble that most Californians don't even know they existed. BTW, I hear they might me starting up that Hockey thing again real soon, so thats good for you Canadians right? Now if you only had a team. :-B

Interesting article. Never thought about some of that stuff (IE: which state has the most major leaguers) ;-D .

great article wr... i disagree with most everything u wrote(as usual) but great article... i was suprised at how few major leaguers florida had though,,, kinda of shocked me they were so low, especially considering the year round baseball the little leaguers play down there....
