Who is the best ALL AROUND catcher?

Postby hooligan1 » Mon Oct 10, 2005 9:11 pm

Who do you guys think is the best all around REAL baseball catcher, not just fantasy-wise? I'm looking for who is the best combo of game-calling, handling the pitching staff, throwing arm, plate blocking, hitting and just general toughness and endurance. In short, the total package.

Please discuss.......

-vmart has a good arm and is the best hitting catcher obviously, hed be near the top of my list
-pudge is a solid hitter, has a good arm and is a leader
-bengie molina has been clutch this offseason so far, has one of the best arms in the game and is a solid hitter/fielder

i dont know THAT much about who calls better games or blocks the plate better

Matheny and Ausmus are about as good as it gets at blocking the plate (though Ausmus had one yesterday that wasn't so hot). Both call a pretty good game.

Yadi Molina is emerging as an excellent all around catcher. He's meshed well with the Cards staff and calls a pretty good game. He's got a great, accurate arm. His offense is coming around.

I say it's Bengie Molina hands down. Pudge was for a long time, but I think his offense and arm have definitely gone downhill the last year+. All the ANA pitchers rave about the games Molina calls and he's one of the best defensive catchers in terms of glove and arm. He also swings a decent bat (usually protecting GA/Vlad in the 5 hole), which is really icing on the cake considering what he does everywhere else. I think Yadier could be up there one day, but he needs to work on blocking the plate more since he tries to get too cute sometimes by picking it with his glove in order to catch a runner napping. There are a lot of catchers who are better at either one or the other, but none that combines both quite like B. Molina IMO.

I'm liking Mathenty too, he ain't too bad of a hitter and he's obviously a great catcher

V-Mart's a decent fielding catcher and we obviously know how he is with a bat

The two Molina brothers are solid, Bengie and Yadier, and Yadier is AWESOME at playing the catcher position in the field.

I've got to give it to Varitek. Excellent with the staff, great hitter, and a team leader.
