The White Sox have the best record in the AL, yet don't have a player who would qualify for the batting title with an average over .300.

When was the last time a team led their respective league in wins, without a player who would qualify for the batting title hitting .300?

Tim Kurkjian said on ESPN radio that the last team to do it was the 1983 White Sox. Maybe he meant AL, but that's not how I interperetted it when he said it.

I researched each answer starting with the most recent, and indeed, the 1988 Mets highest qualifier would have been Kevin McReynolds at .288.

I will award rob the point. And I will not listen to Kurkjian anymore :-b

What about the 2004 Yankees? They led the American League in victories with 101 and their leading hitter was Matsui at .298

You're right, don't know why I missed that. :-/ I still blame Kurkjian.

I'll have KC fix it.
