I'm not sure how far you guys are going back but Doom revolutionized gaming. That to me was the single most important game in history.

EDIT: Actually Castle Wolfenstein was the first of its kind with Doom being the more popular game.

Mario kills every Sonic game, period. Except for the American Super Mario Bros 2, which was pretty bad.
