I tried to get 4 of these 5 in the first 4 rounds. Abreu, Manny, Pedro, Young, and I-Rod. I reached for Figgins and D-train in rounds 6-8. My sleepers that worked out were Hillenbrand and Bonderman. I won over 75 % of my leagues.
I'm not sure it's relevant, because the longer I play this game the more I believe you win championships after Round 5. I guess some of the responses we're seeing reinforce that. Mine pretty much does too:
Helton
Rolen
Sheffield
Rollins
Peavy
With Helton / Rolen (picking 12th) I felt like I didn't even have a choice in the first two rounds. And I regretted the Rollins pick much of the year...but he's duhman come playoff time.
I think alot of 1st place teams needed some good drafts all around to be in 1st place now, or at least some amazing pick-ups during the year. In my 12 team public league,
1. Vladimir Guerrero
2. Miggy Cabrera
3. Mark Prior
4. Michael Young
5. Roy Oswalt
Been in 1st place in this league for a long time, and going to win big here at the end. Also need to say that Carpenter, Brian Roberts, Julio Lugo, Morgan Ensberg helped alot. And the trade this year of Miguel Batista for Todd Helton, in which Helton has hit .395 with 12 HR was great.. that was fun to brag about on our message board.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike
I'm up big and hopefully I can close out the championship over the next couple days. We had 5 keepers in our league from last year, so I guess those count as my first five picks. After some trading in the off-season, these were mine:
Alex Rodriguez (acquired for Schilling, Ortiz, and a swap of mid-round picks)
Johan Santana
Bobby Abreu
Todd Helton
Jake Peavy
