? on what qualifies as a blown save

Postby AuburnTigers » Sun Sep 25, 2005 10:19 pm

I am looking for an expanation of how Linebrink got a blown save this afternoon.

Here are the stat lines:

Rudy Seanez (H,10) 1ip 1h 1er 1bb 2so
Scott Linebrink (BS,5) 0.2ip 0h 0er 1bb 1so

I dont understand how Seanez gets the hold when he is the one that the ER is credited to? It seems as if Seanez should have the blown save and Linebrink have the hold. Any clarity on this would be appreciated.

If Linebrink gets the blown save this will cause me to lose in my championship matchup. One hell of way to go down, if its the case

I'd have to look up the game log but Linebrink could have gave up Seanez's run on his BB.

- Linebrink pitching.
- R.Hernandez in as catcher.
- Terrero pinch-running for Clark.
- Clayton walked on a full count, Terrero to third, Cintron to second.
- McCracken pinch-hitting for Snyder.
- McCracken grounded out, second baseman Loretta to first baseman Fick, Terrero scored, Cintron to third, Clayton to second.
- Glaus pinch-hitting for Vazquez.
- Glaus struck out.

Does this make it a BS?

It is definitely a crappy way for you to lose, but lose you will if that's the case. The problem lies in the way they calculate Holds and Blown Saves. If a pitcher comes in with the lead, and when he walks off the mound his team still has the lead, he gets the Hold. And if a guy is on the mound when the tying run scores, he gets a Blown Save, whether the run is charged to him or not.

For instance, say you have a guy come in, his team up one run, and he gets the last out of the seventh inning. Then in the 8th, still up by one run, he gives up a couple hits and a walk and loads the bases. They bring in a new pitcher, he gets a fly ball (Sac Fly, scores the run) and a DP ball and he's out of the inning. It would be an outstanding performance for him in that situation, but the other guy would get a hold and he would get a Blown Save for his efforts. It's pretty much a joke, but there's not much you can do about it. :-/

Its a blown save. He entered the game in a save situation and he didn't hold the lead. Welcome to the utter worthlessness of stats created to make relievers feel special. :-/
