Haren is close to signing a 4-year deal worth $13 million with the A's, with an option for 2010. The article I'm linking too is primarily about Ricky Henderson possibly signing a one-day contract with the A's so that he can retire as an A, but at the bottom they mention Haren's contract.

This would be a great deal for the A's, and as far as fantasy implications should give Haren a slight bump. It's one less thing for Haren to be worrying about, and he should (hopefully) continue pitching well for the A's. Move Haren up slightly on your 2006 draft boards.

not to hijack this thread (i have been a fan of haren's for a coupla years) but how does this one day contract affect ricky's date of entrance into the hall of fame...is it 5 yrs from now or when he originally retired ?j

Wow, a 4 year deal for Haren. Not sure what I think of this. :-?

I guess I'm not used to the A's keeping players on the team for that long!! :-b

$3+ mil a year...hmm...and he wasn't going to be FA eligible for a while...do they really think he'll do that much better than arbitration would hurt them?

yeah, that's what i was wondering, too. don't they at least have a two or three more years of him? if so, this deal doesn't really give them that much longer.... but i guess the 1-year option could make it worth it. ;-D

I'm not sure. I like Haren and I think he's a good pitcher. Seems like we are overpaying a bit in the front-end of the contract, but by the end of the deal hopefully it will be a bargain. I imagine Haren's pretty happy to get all that money up front too. It does help the A's with long-term planning, as they have a better estimate of what their pitching will cost.

I suspect both Haren and the A's would be happy with the deal. Thinking long-term, I like it. If it keeps us from making a move at the deadline next year, then I'm less happy about it.
