I'm not sure. I like Haren and I think he's a good pitcher. Seems like we are overpaying a bit in the front-end of the contract, but by the end of the deal hopefully it will be a bargain. I imagine Haren's pretty happy to get all that money up front too. It does help the A's with long-term planning, as they have a better estimate of what their pitching will cost.
I suspect both Haren and the A's would be happy with the deal. Thinking long-term, I like it. If it keeps us from making a move at the deadline next year, then I'm less happy about it.
