This person led the Majors in Batting Average (only counting those with enough plate appearances) but failed to lead his league.
Who was he?

hint: the player that lead the league in hitting was traded to the other league. His league average was higher than the player I'm looking for but his overall average was not.

In 1990 Willie McGee was leading the NL in batting when he got traded to the AL freezing his NL average. His overall average dropped lower than Eddie Murray's overall average but McGee's NL average was still higher than Murray.

Murray is the guy I'm looking for as his .33o led the majors but finished 2nd in the NL behind McGee's .335.
