min AB for AL batting title?

what's the minimum official ABs a player can have to win a league batting title? I only ask because placido polanco is now around .350, but he's only got 280 ABs (he'll probably finish with like 350 or so). he'd win the title easily if he qualified, so does he have a shot at it?

I'm not sure but it might be 3.1 plate appearences per game average. At least that's what it says in the newspaper next to the leaders, and that is probably why Polanco is not on the list.

I think it's 3.1 plate appearances per game, which is about 503 plate appearances over a full season. If that's correct, I highly doubt Polanco will get the required plate appearances.

there is a twist to the 501 plate appearances requirement...if a hitter finishes with 485 ABs but still would lead the league in batting average IF he went 0 for 16 (to get him to 501) he still wins the title

A minimum of exactly 502 plate appearances are required or 3.1 PA's per game as has been said. 3.1x162=502.2 which rounds to 502.

hehe! fun rule. if you extended that to any number of ABs, and we assume michael young remains in the league lead and is hitting .330 when the year ends, then polanco would need to hit about .474 in his ~350 ABs in order to win the title.

sadly, that's a bit better than he's doing.

still, great pickup for those who went out and got him! (as well as those of us who drafted him and stuck with his sorry ass the whole time....)
