Leet was originally created by hackers to let them communicate even when people were following their conversations online. The numbers and symbols and such confused any investigators trying to track them down. Eventually it moved into games and really isn't used anymore by hackers. Now its more of a tounge in cheek thing.

Like I said, its generally used as a joke between gamers, and people seriously don't actually speak in it anymore.
