strategy vs team w/ 4RP + 1SP

Postby RiverRat » Mon Jun 16, 2003 5:56 pm

Is there any strategy, other than matching it, when a manager elects to go with 4-RP's and 1-SP? Last year a manager went that way and won the league. This year another manager is trying it. I hate that!!! This game is supposed to reflect regular baseball.
I now only have 3-RP's.
Thanks

There is a good strategy to combat that. Just use 5 starting pitchers. If he is using 4 relievers and only one starter, he will win saves and hope the closers keep his ERA and WHIP low enough to win those categories. However, by doing this he basically is giving up on wins and Ks. If you do the opposite and use lots of SP's, you can win wins and K's and also have a shot at winning saves if his closers get lit up.

It's actually not that hard to beat. Don't go for a bunch of quality pitchers, just trade for a trio or quad of studs. I've tried that reliver strategy a few times and I've been beaten every time by pitching staffs like Zito, Pedro, and Oswalt or Schilling, Maddux, and Pedro. As long as you get a lot of innings and give up only a few runs (which is what the stud pitchers like Pedro give you ), you'll easily beat the reliever strategy since relievers are too unreliable and don't eat up enough innings to keep the ERA and WHIP down, and they won't win strikeouts or wins. Trust me, I've used Dotel, Santana, JC Romero, etc. Grab a couple stud starting pitchers and you'll be his nemesis.

Its a solid strategy. Nobody ever said this game was supposed to reflect regular baseball, but a lot of people try to make it do so. Having a balanced squad is often the wrong way to go.

Your best strategy is to only pitch your ace, and anyone else with a rock solid matchup. Bench everyone else. Make sure you win Ws and Ks, and by only pitching favorable matchups, you're more likely to win ERA and WHIP.
