Cards made offer for B. Giles?

Anyone hear any more than that? I heard they made an offer but no mention of who for or anything else like that.

Any other info would be great!

Also what is everones opinion of this?

I hope this is an off-season rumor, because he wouldn't have a place to play for the post season.

If it is an off-season move, I guess he's basically replacing Walker in the lineup; one old expensive lefty for another. I guess that's maintaining the status quo, and that's got us to the playoffs two years in a row, so I wouldn't complain...

I agree, I am the only one in the office who thinks this may be a bad move. I think he is a FA after this year too, and I know that we have a good rate at signing people in this situation but I still would not want to give up a good prospect for him right now. Especially if Sanders and Walker end up healthy. I guess we will see. He would fit nicely in RF and at the #2 spot next year with his high walk #'s though. Just would hate to overpay for Giles.

Unless they're getting him for nothing, that move doesn't really make much sense to me. Like JT said, you're replacing one aging OF past his prime with another, but I guess with Walt's track record, who am I to question the move. He would be a good fit for the No 2 spot since LaRussa likes to have some pop in the two hole and he definitely gets on base. It's a good fit in some ways baseball wise, but I'm not so sure about from a contractual/money standpoint. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It doesn't make much sense to me. SD looks like they will make the playoffs. Giles is a FA after this year. Unless Pujols moves back to 3B and Walker or Giles to 1B the Cards would have to sit one of Sanders, Walker or Giles and Taguchi (one of our hottest hitters) would be buried on the bench.

Pujols moving to 3rd for the playoffs...now that would be wild!

from what i understand they inquired about giles before the july 31 deadline when the status of sanders and walker was a little iffy. san diego wasnt interested in moving him. he is a free agent at the end of the season. giles is still a good bat that hits pretty well outside of petco (ops over 1.000). i think he would be a good acquisition both now and in the offseason. now, he gives us a good option because walker is still iffy and so is sanders. even if both are healthy, he would give us a good bat at DH if we made the world series. but since the pads are leading in the west i think there is zero chance he gets traded.

edit: he is only making 7 mil this year so i dont think he is too expensive.
