Seriously, this guy has been absolutely killing me lately. I know he had some shoulder thing a month ago and that team's offense isn't the best it's been in recent memory right now but what's with the 1 HR in August (the 5th) and a .215 Avg in July?!?
jim edmonds might be the most talented player in baseball.
shh...i'm serious. what's more, i am a reds fan--no love for the cardinals.
jim edmonds doesn't go 100% very often. other cardinals players joke about it, calling him hollywood (steps it up for those big/dramatic moments) and they gratefully celebrate when he does pull through on some of those mind-numbing plays.
he's a laid-back cat. with the cardinals cruising to a first place finish, he's got no reason to push it.
It's Edmonds being Edmonds. He's a streaky player, yes, but I'll give you that he has been sucking it up more than usual lately. He's also still fighting the remnants of the shoulder injury you mentioned, so that's part of it too. You also have to consider that he is 35, throws himself around in the OF like he's a 23 year old rookie at times, and that '04 was definitely his career year. Expectations were really high for Edmonds this year, and I kept wondering where the justification for those were coming from.
Since I have an OF of M Cab, Crawford, Edmonds, Wells, and J Guillen and no room to play him at Util (Hafner @ 1B and Helton @ Util) I'm seriously considering dropping Edmonds before h2h Playoffs start in favor of another SP. He's killing me and wasting a roster spot at this point.
Reitsma comes in last night in an 8-1 game for mop up duty and gives up 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 BB in 1 inning? Looks like Jimmy Edmonds is headed to the FA pool for Farnsworth any minute.
I don't think you'd regret that move for one second. He won't be consistent enough during the final weeks of the season to crack that OF if from nothing else than lack of PT as LaRussa rests the few regulars he has left.
Saints I'm pulling the trigger. If this backfires and he goes buck wild like he did last August and July this one is on you. You're the homer here, not me. Thanks for accepting responsibility.

Anytime. Seriously though if I were in your situation, I'd probably do the same thing. While LaRussa will never let up, the team's got nothing to play for.
I'm crossing my fingers for Farnsworth. Otherwise I'll end up with like Ervin Santana, Silva, Papelbon, or like Delmon Young if he comes up. Something like that wouldn't be too bad either.
