Pirates LHP Duke exits after two innings with leg injury
August 23, 2005 PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - Perhaps only Zach Duke can slow himself down.
Duke, the lefthanded starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates, suffered an apparent injury while running the bases in the bottom of the second inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
With Duke on second base and Chris Duffy on first with nobody out, Nate McLouth hit a liner that tipped off the glove of shortstop David Eckstein. Thinking the ball was going to be caught, Duke slid back into second base to avoid a double play and jammed his left ankle against the bag. He was tagged out after leaving the base and limped off the field.
I don't know how serious it is, but leg injuries tend to make pitchers return too early, thinking they are fine, only to find that they can't make the push to home they used to...I think Duke's fantasy season is over.
Manager Lloyd McClendon, interviewed between innings on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh's telecast, said Duke felt ``something pop'' in the ankle. Duke was immediately examined by team doctors, but there was no word how long he would be out.

"It hurts right now, but there wasn't anything broken," said Duke. The team will reexamine Duke's ankle Wednesday morning, Aug. 24. - KFFL.com

Wasn't there just a story about the Pirates shutting down Zach Duke for the rest of the year?
In my opinion, they should shut him down if he is not able to make his next start. They aren't going to the playoffs and freak things like that happen and could screw them over for the next year.
I agree that Duke should be shut down for the year. He's pitched more innings this year than any other year in his career....something like 167.2 so far between the minors and majors. Although this is a leg injury, I don't want to see him rush back and risk an arm injury.
I may be biased since I own him for the next 6 years in my fantasy league, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't want to see him injured and his talent wasted on a season where the Pirates aren't going to the playoffs anyway.
