Wood in the bullpen

Postby cubsrock » Fri Aug 19, 2005 9:25 pm

I think if he stayed in the bullpen he could become one of the premier closers in the league. I read an interview by him once and he said "If I wanted to strike out every batter I could, but then my arm would be killing me by the 2nd or 3rd inning."
Now he doesnt have to worry about that 2nd and third inning and he can go all out in the one inning that he does pitch. Hes throwing his fastball 97 98 and 99 almost all the time and his slider is in the high 80's. I think he could be one of those guys like rivera and gange who were mediocre starters and got converted to closers and are great.

Wood needs to be somewhere else hurting some other team who is willing to pay him multi-millions for his dead arm.

Dempster's our closer. The man gives up more walks than I am comfortable with, but you cant argue with the results:

33 saves in 35 opportunities, and recorded wins in both of his blown saves.

Wood is salvagable if he can change his mechanics (How many years have we been saying this now?) If not, he'll go down as one the biggest wastes of talent in recent memory. If he can change and stays healthy, he's on his way to Cooperstown.

Hell, we're Cub fans. Belief in miracles is all that keeps us going sometimes.

I don't like the idea of Wood in the bullpen at all..The cubs bullpen REALLY looks good this year with eyre/howry as setup men and novoa/ohman as 6-7th inning guys..i really like all 4 of those guys and dempster in the 9th has been wonderful..Kerry Wood got his surgery done, and once he comes back the Cubs pitching will be the most dominant in baseball.
