Gagne, no save tonight??

Postby Jack-In-A-Box » Sun Jun 15, 2003 1:08 am

L.A. was leading 5-2 going into the 9th. Why wouldnt they bring in Gagne to close the door? I would think with him and Smoltz going back and forth for the ML lead they'd give him every opp that the team has. Anyone know what the move was about? Giving the guy a day off maybe? Hurt?

Most likely just a day off in case they need him tomorrow.

He had pitched 4 straight days before today so Tracy said last night that they wouldn't be using him even in a save situation. Relief pitchers can't pitch more than 4-5 days a week without risking arm injury or loss of effectiveness down the road.

Teams play to win now, and try and keep their guys fresh for the latter part of year. A save race in June has no bearing.

As a baseball fan, I despise the save stat. Some managers are overly obsessed with the stat and try to give their closers every opportunity to get a save like putting them in with a 4 run lead and a man on first. That is not a pressure situation at all and only burns their closer making them less available the next day.

A manager should use their closer in the toughest situation possible, whether that be in the 7th, 8th or 9th inning.

The Dodgers are going to trade Eric Gagne to the Red Sox for Chad Fox, David Ortiz, and 2 draft picks in 2004, which is why they are grooming their new closer to the role. Eric Gagne has his bags packed already and the deal will be announced on Monday. The Red Sox wanted Gagne over Benitez or Uggie because his salary is not high, which is why they didn't want to re-sign Uggie.
