Pretty ironic - they're having their worst season in years, yet this might be the greatest season ever in attendance for the Yanks. They're currently averaging 49,619 (according to John Sterling, as of 8.13.05). This would put them on pace to break last year's record total attendance pretty well, giving them a shot at 4 million fans, and would set a new high for per-game attendance. Very few teams have averaged 50,000 fans over an entire season - I know Toronto and Colorado both did it in 1993 (Colorado actually averaged 55K - unbelievable). Of course, this could go up if they're in a dogfight for the playoffs, and go down if they slump and fall out of contention.
Baseball-Almanac.com has attendance figures going back for every team, in case you're interested.
