I recently said something stupid (whats new) in a chat room, and the admin suggested that I leave or I may experience a cyber attack or something from one of the members. Could that happen? And what all could they do?

Just because it's the internet, that's not free reign to cause issues and think there won't be consequences to face.

They could find out your name or (people in your home) and address for starters. Maybe your SS#, what you do, things like that.

Yep, name, address, and once they have that, your whole world is open to them. Social security #, Driver's License #, what cars you own, credit cards, etc, etc. Basically anything they want.

Well, if you get anything through E-Mail, don't open attachments if you don't know who it's from (duh).

I doubt they would do anything serious.

You could get a brute force hacking program and try to bust into your email accounts however, these take a really long time...I've tried to bust into my buddies and it wasn't worth it.

The easiest way for someone to hack into your account would be to ask you for the password or write a scripted email that phishes for information.

As for breaking into your computer it would be a little tougher especially if you are on a router and don't have an IP assigned directly to your computer.
