ESPN just ran breaking news during the Sox-Rangers game that said Thome is having elbow surgery next week.

Jim Thome will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week, the Phillies announced.
This comes as quite a surprise. The Phillies are calling Thome's injury a frayed tendon. We imagine that some would have gutted it out and elected for surgery after the season. The Phillies will be OK with Ryan Howard at first base for the rest of the year, but Howard isn't a healthy Jim Thome.


Time for me to go drop him in my keeper league and pick up John Thomson.

This is good news for me....I'm trying to trade N. Johnson to a guy who's had Thome stashed on his DL, holding out hope he'll return and play like Jim Thome for the stretch run. Might help him change his mind a little bit.
