While I'd definitely take Joe DiMaggio over the field in a bet over who will have the longest hit streak when all current major leaguers have retired, Jose Reyes's current 19-game hit streak got me thinking...
...among active players, I think Reyes may have the best shot to break DiMaggio's record at some point in his career. The dude almost never walks, so he'll get 5 at bats in a ton of games. He's got the speed to leg out an infield hit or a bunt single here or there. And if he's anywhere near as good as touted -- though the .282 career average thus far suggests otherwise -- he's bound to have at least one great year during his career where he posts a .320+ average.
Anyway, just figured it would be interesting to see what everyone thought about this. I'm sure I've left out some other intriguing candidates since this is an off-the-top-of-my-head thought, but I'm curious: who does everyone think stands the best shot at getting a 57-game hit streak at any point during their career, among active players, beyond the obvious stars?
It's one stat I think is untouchable. Dimaggio supposedly got help from the official scorer on at least a couple of occassions. I'm still amazed at Rose's run.
For the sake of argument, I agree, Ichiro is probably the best bet, but nobody will come close.
I think Michael Young has the best chance of anyone right now. Aside from being a great average hitter he is guaranteed pitches to hit for the next few years with Teixeira and company batting behind him and in that bandbox in Arlington.
