When do we change base on balls?

Postby Surfs up » Sat Aug 06, 2005 10:36 am

A few years ago somebody decided that there isn't an S after RBI. So we now say Giambi has 80 RBI and not RBIS. So when do you change Base on Balls? We now say Walks. When was the last time anybody walked to first base? Think its time to just say Base on Balls and forget saying walks? Yup this is nit picking but thats what this world has come to.Somebody has decided we need to be correct in our speaking. Chairman was changed to chairperson. Crap like that. Funny thing is something that hasn't been changed. In a womens basketball game. They play MAN TO MAN. Is that next ? WOMAN To WOMAN?Most of these we just say and don't even think about what they really mean . Just venting a bit. What are your thoughts.

I think bases on balls is ok, if you're losing sleep over it. Runs batted in works, too. It's only when acronyms are used that the English professors are going to crawl out of the woodwork. (A location that reduces their credibility for me, but what are you gonna do?) At the risk of reprising that whole argument, I think RBIs is ok, too. Sure, it's Run that is being pluralized, not "In." But when you create a plural, you're pluralizing the whole word/term not the last letter. Bill had 1 RBI, Tom had 3 RBIs, Susie had 0 RBIs.

If you want to have a useful discussion, can someone explain to my why ZERO is plural? That's what's costing me sleep.

And who the hell decided that "went" is the past tense of "go"? I'm damned glad I didn't have to pick up English as an adult...

If they have any interest at all in boosting interest and attendance at women's games, the correct term would of course be "woman on woman." Then you might see some guys crawling off the couch to catch some games.
