Aquino?!? WTF?

From Fanball:
Aug 2
Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin has taken note of reliever Greg Aquno's strong outings lately and has decided to give him the chance to close games in addition to Brian Bruney. "If I feel like it's Bruney today, it'll be Bruney," Melvin told MLB.com. "If I feel like I need to do something different depending on how we get there, I may do something different. Nothing's changed in roles, but we feel like we're getting Aquino farther along to where we feel that much more comfortable pitching the eighth and ninth inning."

Hey, Bob ... check your hurlers' last 10 appearances:

Aquino — 9.2 IP, 9 ER, 11 K, 8.38 ERA, 1.65 WHIP
Valverde — 11 IP, 1 ER, 15 K, 0.82 ERA, 1.09 WHIP

I can't believe Seattle let you get away.

Maybe his logic is that Valverde can get him two good innings while the Bruney/Aquino tandem can only get him one bad inning?

Me, I'm going Cormier, Medders in the seventh and eighth and Valverde in the ninth for now. Once Lyon gets back, you can go Valverde/Lyon or vice versa at the finish line.

Bruney and Aquino are in less vital situations till one or both shows capabilities of getting the job done with some consistency.

And I can't see how this should be done any differently.

Melvin does, I think they just need a new more pitcher-oriented coach.

I agree with you AK, Valverde is back to 2003 form. Aquino has not put together a really good streak yet since return from injury and has had some really rough patches. Sure Aquino suceeded last year, but right now Valverde is looking like a much bette bet, and he handled he job well before he got hurt two years ago.

I thought I was beating my league to the punch when I grabbed Aquino from FA today and queued him up for a claim. Then I came to my senses and backed off on the move.
Now, nearly 12 hours later, nobody in the 14-team league has taken the shot either :-B.
