Javy Lopez - What to expect?

Postby bd3521 » Tue Aug 02, 2005 2:40 pm

What do you guys think of him down the stretch?
I am not sure he will return to his old self as he is recovering from injury.

is .280 and 10 HR's feasible?

I have too much depth at catcher with Javy, Shelton, and Kendall.
(Shelton gets the edge because he starts everyday of the week and in the #3 hole)

I'm still optimistic about Javy. Here's why. Since he returned 5 games ago he's hit two homers and a triple along with a couple singles. I wasn't expecting the power to return so fast. I'd say the numbers you project for him sound about right, especially the average, although I could see him getting more than 10 dingers the rest of the season.

With all the Palmiero stuff going down it will be interesting to see if Javy gets pushed up in the batting order for a while. I'd love to see him bat 4th for a while and see how he does there.

With Shelton being C eligible in your league, I'd rank them Shelton > Javy > Kendall.

I'd agree with that order -- however, Shelton hit the skids (a fairly empty 5/23, no HRs) a little last week. And he has now been around long enough that pitchers have a book on him (see Bo Hart).

As MLB's director of stats noted, Shelton's K ratio indicates that he is far more likely to be .250-.270 guy than .300 hitter. But he does have power. No question about that.

I expect good power numbers from Shelton but a pretty sharp fall off in average.

He will struggle to hit another 10 Hr's and even if he does his average will be no better than .270 -.275.

Kendall's waiver wire material in my 14 team league. He's not even close to the other two IMO.
