I was just checking out some dudes on the WW out of complete boredom. And, man, was I surprised to see the year Fossum is having after looking at his stats. On any other halfway decent team, he'd be a fat guy to have in the middle of a rotation. Those K numbers are great. I like the WHIP, too! What gives? I thought this guy sucked?
No matter how you spin it, those are good numbers. Put him on a team with some run support, and he's got double-digit Ws with those numbers. I AM very surprised. I admit it. He had that one good year in Boston. But he's been bad since -- until now apparently.
I picked him up about a month or two ago when I was riddled with injuries with my staff. I'm in a 14 team league that goes 350 players deep and we count Ks, so it was worth a shot. He's turned out to be solid. You could do a lot worse of the WW, as long as you don't expect many Ws.
He was one of my big sleepers this year. Was always a good prospect, and the third year in the bigs is usually the charm. I believe I wrote about this in the second half sleepers thread.
Those are average numbers, not good. His WHIP is on the high side, his ERA is around 4... he's walking a guy every 2.5... no thanks. Back end guy in a deep league, nothing more.

If this was 1989 then I would agree. These days, I consider those numbers better than average, especially the K's. If he could get some wins, he wouldn't be on the wire in any league.

Absolutely agree with the above post. If you can average close to a K per inning, keep your ERA under 4, and keep your WHIP in the 1.2's, you are a better than average SP.
