Along with placing him on the DL, the Cubs announced today that Kerry Wood would be sent to the bullpen after he returns from a sore shoulder. Wood could end the season as the club's closer, though it wouldn't make much sense to hand him Ryan Dempster's job right away. Because Wood's shoulder could remain a factor even as a reliever, Dempster still looks like the best bet for saves the rest of the way. That Wood is going to the pen makes it likely that the Cubs will acquire a starting pitcher this week. They'll probably pursue Jason Schmidt if the Giants make him available. Jul. 25 - 6:52 pm et
i have dempster, i so hope wood doesn't take the closer gig away from him just because of his flashier name.
i have a friend in my league who is paranoid about making trades.
a trade proposal of mine that he rejected was my helton + hermanson + brazoban 4 david ortiz. he regrets rejecting that now (his only closer is street).
another proposal that was rejected was my sheff for prior. i'm glad he rejected it.
and most recently, i proposed my cantu and macdougal for wood. i know macdougal is a low end closer and all, but even he alone is worth more than wood now who's just become only a MR.

See, I am not sure I believe this without a quote from someone on the team. Unless they have a trade lined up to acquire another starter I cant believe that they will just automatically put him in the pen. It just doesnt make sense to do that this year, as long as Dempster is still doing ok.

If you say so. To me, if he cant start, then just let him have his surgery now (unless he is gonna close and you trade for a SP or move Dempster back to the rotation). Otherwise, Wood pitching middle relief is a waste.

Cubs are trying to win. Now. If Wood can come back to help the team in any way, he should. There is no point in forfeiting the season when you can still throw the ball.
