Anyone have a timetable for his return? I can get him cheap in a trade, but want to know if I can even use him.

Perez (broken toe) could start throwing off the mound within a week. Manager Lloyd McClendon cautioned that he's still a ways off and will need a rehab stint before rejoining the team, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

He made it through a long-toss session Friday afternoon without pain. "He said he felt good, free and easy," McClendon said. "He continues to get better." The time off could serve Perez well, once he makes his return. He has struggled all season with a 6-5 mark and a 6.16 ERA. "I'm trying to forget about what happened before," Perez said. "I want to get out there and start winning again."

He is a free agent in my league but I am staying away (even though I have room). Too many walks = too many disasters. :-t

I actually have him on my DL, but he'll probably be the guy dropped when he gets healthy. My SP is too good and he's just too risky. Maybe if he comes back awesome I can pawn him off on someone, but we'll just have to see.

Oliver Perez (broken left toe) had a throwing session on
Tuesday in the bullpen at PNC Park.

Perez threw only 25 pitches. The team does not expect him
back until some time in September.

Oliver Perez (P) Pit had bullpen session at PNC Park on Tuesday, according to the AP. Perez, who is out with a broken left toe, threw only 25 pitches. The Pirates aren't targeting his return until next month.

I have much more faith in Perez than anyone in the cafe it seems. At this point Perezs' upside alone makes him worth a gamble, especially with playoffs just around the corner. There is nobody on the waiver wire or any rookies that are going to come out of nowhere that could possibly make the difference that Perez could. If he was on my leagues waivers, I would be licking my chops. He might not be as good as he was last year, but he is a strikeout pitcher, those guys get you points even without winning in points leagues. My advise if you have any borderline pitchers to drop for him, do it. I am just waiting for him to be dropped in my league, but I think the guy is smarter than that. If you lose out on the Felix Hernandez lottery, grab Perez!
