Joe Randa to the Padres for Prospects!

Postby TheGrump » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:59 pm

ESPN.com reports:

Intent on holding onto the NL West lead, the Padres on Saturday acquired third baseman Joe Randa from the Cincinnati Reds for Triple-A pitcher Justin Germano and Double-A pitcher Travis Chick.

I think will help the Padres try to make a playoff push. As a Red's fan, I have been impressed with Randa's professionalism in his at bats and his fielding.
Does anyone have any information on these two pitching prospect the Red's got?? I'm just wondering if it is another bad O'Brien move like trading Reitsma and getting Bong and Nelson!!!

Chick is a potential no 3
Germano a potential no 5

Does this mean that Encarnacion gets and audition at 3B?

Yes. He's already been recalled. But I would expect Freel and Aurillia to see time there as well. Lopez also plays some 3rd, so the Reds have a handful of players that can play different infield positions and will get evryone in and around. But this is Edwin's shot to show he can play at this level for next year.

Good trade for both teams, although I think we may have paid a tad too much. Randa is solid, but he's not going to revive our terrible, as of now, offense. Germano had terrible control problems in the bigs, but both are promising young pitchers. I'll accept it because it means no more Burroughs :-) .

Awhile back I wrote:Rumor is that he would play third, but I still think it's a stupid trade. Why do we want a second baseman to come play third for us, hitting .237 with 6 homeruns and 33 rbi? We already have that guy: Geoff Blum. Blum's hitting .240 with 4 homeruns and 18 rbi in signifantly less time.

Stupid trade (can't believe I'm against a trade that would replace Sean Burroughs) and I doubt it happens. Joe Randa would be a much better fit.
