It's getting into round 24-26 in the 8 5x5 team keeper/dynasty league I'm in.
I have two backup batters in Mike Cameron and Jacque Jones, and I need to pick up at least one or two players that can fill in occasionally this yr. This is the the list of players I'm looking at, with the players I'm most interested in starting at the top:
Scott Spiezio: 1B-3B
Eli Marrero: C-OF
Jeff Liefer: 1B-OF
Craig Counsell: 3B-SS
Ramon Vazquez: 2B-3B-SS
Craig Wilson: 1B-OF
Jose Valentin: 3B-SS
D'Angelo Jimenez: 2B-3B
Jose Vizcaino: 2B-3B-SS
Frank Catalanotto: 1B-2B-OF
John Valentin: 1B-3B-SS
Denny Hocking: 2B-3B-SS
What order would you rank the top, maybe 3 players, in this list?
Also, which do you think would be the smartest move...taking two players from the above list and either Francisco Rodriguez or Dotel, or taking one batter and snagging both F-Rod AND Dotel?
Sorry, posting my team might help with that second question...
C: Mike Piazza
1B: Jeff Bagwell
2B: Jeff Kent
SS: Edgar Rentaria
3B: Eric Chavez
OF: Magglio Ordonez, Manny Ramirez, Larry Walker
UTIL: Luis Gonzalez
SP: Barry Zito, Kevin Millwood, Matt Morris, Randy Wolf, Javier Vazquez, Hideo Nomo, Brian Lawrence, Brett Myers
RP: Mariano Rivera, Armando Benitez, Jorge Julio, Scott Williamson
Bench: Mike Cameron, Jacque Jones
Wow, looks like you went heavy on pitchers. It looks like you're currently in a situation of needing backups at *every* position, as you have 6 outfielders, and only 1 player at every other hitting position.
If Kent were still 1B eligible, like last year, you'd be in a better position, but he's probably not (9 games last year probably doesn't give him elibility).
You kinda need backups for any older players, and also for players that have been injured before, or for players that aren't guaranteed to have a good year. Which means nearly every position on your roster, other than OF. But, on the other hand, you can always pick up fill-ins off of waivers, so I wouldn't be *too* worried.
You should definitely pick up Marrero, as a backup for Piazza. If he gets really hot and you have no place to play him, you can always trade him.
Frank Catalanotto is a good option based solely on the positions he plays. Just hope that he bats leadoff and hits better than he did last year.
Personally, I'd probably take Marrero, then take a pitcher, then take either Catalanotto or Jimenez.
I would take Marerro #1. If you want to have backups for most of the positions, I would take Vazquez #2. That would only leave 1st open and it is possible Marrero could play there sometime this year.
i'd put Jose Valentin: 3B-SS as my #1 pick. You have a gimpy SS as it is and you can platoon Valenin between SS and 3B and he has lots of pop and decent speed.

Thanks for the responses...actually Jose Hernandez was taken in the 21st round :(
Lot of diff responses, which I guess is to be expected with players at this level...I'll definitely take Marrero to backup Piazza. And prolly Valentin...not sure who to take as the 3rd player yet...I guess I don't need another pitcher since I'm stocked already, eh?
I could always try to trade Gonzo also for a player at a different position, if someone will take him.
Dotel, at this stage, is a great pick, esp. if you start guys every day. He will help your ERA and WHIP. He also had more Ks than Eric Gagne last year.
F-rod is a really good pick too, esp. in a keeper league.
As for utility players, Marrero is a good choice because you know Piazza wont play 150 games. I'd also take Craig Counsell, but a fwe rounds later.
You can never be too stocked at pitching, TRUST ME.
PS, did you guys do a ton of trades or what? I thought you got Prior late but your draft says in went in the third to someone else.
Zack Greinke...the next Greg Maddux. LOOK IT UP!
For what it's worth.
just curious...do you think i should definitely grab a util player, or since it's a dynasty league, should I take a chance on Texiera, and if (or "when" I should say) one of my infielders goes down this season, I could just fish from the waiver wire? This league's for at least 3-5+ yrs, so the thought of getting a great prospect is interesting me now, instead of a fill in guy.
Jay, the other league I was in that you saw pretty much died. Ppl stopped making their picks in a timely manner, sometimes going days at a time. Oh well, at least we found out about the deadbeats before the draft was over, as opposed to halfway through the season.
