General William Westmoreland just died at the ripe old age of 91. He was vilified, chastised, and blamed by many for America's defeat in Vietnam where he commanded the war from 1964 to 1968 and oversaw the massive escalation. When asked about America's defeat, he always pointed out that his troops never lost a single battle and the blame for the loss of the war was with the South Vietnamese Army, the politicians in Washington, and the protesters back home. He was put in an unwinable situation by LBJ and McNamara who insisted on micro-managing the war. When Reagan restored a sense of dignity long overdue the troops, there was a big parade in Washington - Westy was unsure if he should attend as he was afraid the veterans would be upset to see him and would cause problems - on the contrary, the vets knew he shouldered no blame and accepted him with open arms.
I tried hard not to make this a political post as that's outta season here until 2008, lol. If this becomes political, feel free to lock it up mods!
