They undergo tremendous physical strain for 3-4 hours straight and doing it in incredible heat. On top of that every time they go through a turn (nearly half the race) they have to fight off the G-Force which takes alot of strength.
I just don't see driving- something where something else is mechanically propelling you as much of a sport.
Its a huge skill and something not many people could do well no doubt, but a sport? I don't think so.
Its like saying the pilots of the Blue Angels are athletes. They undergo immense forces and have incredible abilities but pilots, just like drivers aren't athletes. That doesn't make anything they do less impressive, its just not what they are.
The best athlete I've ever seen, by far. Tecmo Bowl or otherwise.
I've got that baseball card boxed up somewhere too .
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

Jim Brown Bo Jackson Jim Thorpe Lance Armstrong Carl Lewis Wilt Chamberlain Michael Jordan Danny Ainge
Those are the best male athletes of all time IMO, In order. (I'm sure I forgot someone and probably short changed several guys from back in the day).
Danny Ainge?? LOL
An All-American and winner of the Wooden Award as college basketball player of the year in 1981, Ainge was a member of Boston's NBA Championship teams in 1984 and 1986. Ainge was the second player in NBA history to hit 900 three-point shots and the fourth to reach 1,000. On June 5, 1992, he tied the NBA playoff record by scoring 9 points in one overtime period vs. Chicago Bulls.
Ainge also played professional baseball while attending Brigham Young University and in parts of three seasons with the AL's Toronto Blue Jays. Ainge is also a scratch golfer and many say he could've made the pro tour had he dedicated himself to it.
I know it looks funny up against these guys but anyone who can be pro in those 3 sports is an absolute beast IMO. A lot of guys have done 2, but 3?
Ted Williams was one of the greatest hitters of all-time, a world-class fly fisherman, and an outstanding fighter pilot. I don't know if that makes him one of the greatest athletes, but I know it beats Kurt Busch.
Tank Abbott's name deserves to be mentioned somewhere on here too.
