Not necessarily. Take Greg Norman. He makes so much $$ off of the golf course that it is really just a hobby for him now.

Let me put it this in a better way:
When you are a multi-millionare golfer like David Duval because of his winnings on the PGA Tour and you never have to work again, you can prioritize family over golf, no problem.
Right now, I think that is what Weir is doing.

Most of the top players in the world, make most of their money off of advertising golf clubs and clothes, and whatnot.
